Let’s take a closer look.
A smart device is simply any device that connects to the internet or your business network.
Some are obvious.
Security cameras.
Wireless printers.
Door access systems.
Smart TVs.
Others are less obvious.
Meeting room displays, heating and cooling systems, voice assistants, coffee machines, and even some photocopiers can all be connected.
These devices are incredibly useful.
The challenge is that many of them are installed, set up once, and then forgotten.
Unlike laptops or phones, they don’t always receive regular attention, making them an attractive target for cybercriminals.
The more connected your business becomes, the more opportunities attackers have to look for weaknesses.
Many smart devices still use default passwords or go months, sometimes years, without important software updates.
Some businesses don’t even realise these updates exist.
Cybercriminals know this.
Rather than trying to break into a well-protected computer, they often look for the easiest way in.
A forgotten security camera.
An old printer.
A meeting room display that hasn’t been updated.
Once inside, they may be able to move through your network and access more valuable business systems.
The good news is that protecting smart devices is often much simpler than people expect.

It sounds unbelievable.

Many smart devices are installed using the manufacturer’s default password.
Changing it immediately is one of the simplest and most effective security improvements you can make.
Manufacturers regularly release updates that fix security issues.
Taking a few minutes to install them can significantly reduce your risk.
Where possible, keep connected devices on a separate network from your main business computers and servers.
That way, if one device is ever compromised, it’s much harder for attackers to move further into your business.
Old printers, cameras, or other connected equipment that are no longer needed should be disconnected completely.
Every unnecessary device is another potential entry point.
It’s easy to forget about devices once they’re installed.
Regular reviews help ensure they’re updated, properly configured, and continuing to protect your business rather than putting it at risk.
You probably wouldn’t expect a robot vacuum to become a cybersecurity concern.
But earlier this year, security researchers uncovered a vulnerability in certain Shark robot vacuums that could have allowed attackers to access live camera feeds, stored maps of a home or office, and even saved Wi-Fi credentials. While the issue has since been addressed, it’s a good reminder that even everyday connected devices can become potential security risks if they’re not properly protected.
Most businesses won’t have a robot vacuum roaming the office, but they do rely on internet-connected security cameras, printers, meeting room displays, smart TVs, and door access systems.
The lesson is simple: if something as ordinary as a vacuum cleaner can create a cybersecurity risk, it’s worth taking a closer look at every connected device in your business.
